He didn't appear to be munching on my plants, so I didn't smash him, but I can remember walking around the yard in Houma with Maumie, my great grandmother, and she took no sympathy on these pests. The grasshoppers in her garden were big, nearly twice this size, and black, and she pop them flat right between her hands. I was impressed as a child, and as think of her now I am smiling thinking of the story that kind of defines her personality...using a shovel to chop a snake in the road in two, without a wince, so that her grandchildren and great grandchildren could cross without fear. That was Maumie.

Grasshopper this morning
