Some of what we love about Montana
Wednesday, June 13, 2007
Cheers!
Congratulations, Laurie and John!

Quite a backdrop for a wedding, right? Amazing.

The bride and groom sealed their vows with a shot of Belizean rum. After a swig, the rum was sealed in a box they made, along with letters written to each other, to be opened after 25 years of marriage.

It was quite an event, and what a party! Seven hours of dining, drinking, and dancing. We had a great time, and didn't even know not one of the other guests.

We're hoping to get Laurie and John down to New Orleans real soon.

Visiting Pam
Aunt Pam lives in Missoula, and we got to get in a few days of visiting. We enjoyed seeing "her city." We shared some yummy meals and caught up on life since we haven't seen her for nearly two years.

(Charlie, Pammie, and her dog Maddie)
She took us on her favorite hike along Bear Creek...just a short drive from her house.

It is starting to be quite evident that Montana is an outdoorsman's paradise. I'd imagine living here would mean lots more time outside for us. On second thought, maybe not. It gets pretty cold during the winter.

Hiking Out
Four days later, and only 25 baby wipes later, we broke camp and headed out.

We had the 10 miles to hike back to the car, the last two would be uphill...ugh. We got an early start so we could take our time.
We stopped a for a bit to share some trail mix and the view.
My feet felt great in my sandals!

By mile seven we were hot and tired and growing less appreciative of the view!
I was ready for a burger and a shower.
As much as I moaned and growned for a shower those four days, I am glad we spent the time in the backcountry. Charlie reminded me that hiking out there brought us one step deeper into the wilderness, and our experiences hiking only five miles in wouldn't have been the same. I agree, and I also like the physical challenge of backpacking. Next time I'll bring more dehydrated mocha pudding and use more baby wipes!

Helen Lake
The Belly River Trial continues along Elizabeth Lake and on to Helen Lake. We hiked out 4.5 miles to Helen Lake after a day of rest. (Charlie kept telling me I was walking like I had been riding a horse for a week.) It was an easy walk through the valley.
We came across what Charlie thinks is a grouse...
And a young deer that was just as interested in us as we were in him. He got close enough that I could have reached out and pet him.
And the butterflies were everywhere!
The snow melt meant the water was flowing along the mountain side. This one was pretty loud.
We stopped to get some water.
..that we would incorrectly purify. We're still not sick, knock on wood. Hopefully our haphazard methods were sufficient to kill just enough of those parasites!
We came upon bear tracks.
And even bear scat (yep, that's bear poop!).
But not a single bear! We had our bells and Charlie made noise to prevent an encounter, but we wanted to see one...across the valley, in the mountain, just see one. Every other camper we spoke with had seen at least one grizzly. Many had run into several on the way to Elizabeth Lake from Cosley Lake. Hmph. I decided, being my father's daughter and all, that the next time anyone asked us if we'd seen a bear I'd tell some fantastic story about facing off with a mother grizzly. I don't like to be outdone. I never did get to tell my story, much to Charlie's relief!
The snow kept us from getting to the bank of Helen Lake, but we found a rock to sit on, listen to the rushing water, and enjoy the sun.

Ahern Glacier is along this portion of the range.

Charlie, being a glacier expert and all, thought they were rather small and isn't even sure if they still qualify as glaciers. I wonder how much they've shrunk over the last decade. But you've gotta have glaciers in Glacier Park, right?

In a few weeks, when the snow melts, this will be a perfect campsite. Maybe next year.

Oh, yeah...I'm planning another national park trip for next year. I have a few ideas, but need to do a bit more research.

They wouldn't be my photos without flowers!
I took only a few pictures of flowers, as I was really overstimulated by all of the new plants! I really needed a few days to devote to just taking pictures and trying out my camera.
So these aren't fantastic, but give a small view into the flowers in the park. Many, many more flowers were about to bloom. Literally, early July should be spectacular for wildflowers in Montana.

We saw lots of bear grass about to bloom...
And only a few in bloom...

There were dandelions everywhere! Fields and fields full of them.

Just a few Indian paintbrush were in bloom...these are my favorites.
The skunk cabbage is everywhere! I think these look tropical, and wonder how they'd grow here. Charlie says he's only seen them in the mountains. I also wonder if the name "skunk cabbage" implies this is not something I want growing in my yard!

Shooting stars...tiny, tiny blossoms....
I found five of these over the weekend, and pressed them in our trail guide book!

I think these were glacier lilies coming up through the snow.

And Charlie's favorite, the columbine....

Our place
See how small Charlie is, fishing in Elizabeth Lake? Sitting and watching made me vividly aware of how insignificant man really is in this world. We are just a very small piece of the earth, yet the dynamic between all facets of the earth seems to be effected by us more and more.
A View of the Valley
We made a short hike up the mountain to look at the lake and valley from above. It was a pleasant, not too steep, hike with cool temperatures. We hiked as far as we were able before coming upon considerable ice.

Our campsite is on the edge of that lake!

I also took a minute to show off my "foolio" talents that I learned from dearest Charlie.

These were examples as to how I would scare off a bear. Luckily I never did have to show my stuff.
