Sunday

He just put away the TexMex Slam. Doesn't he look happy?

Saturday and Sunday's outings remain. Breakfast is a must. But the bakeries in our neighborhood are closed for summer vacation. No bagels. No brioche. Instead we ventured 2 miles down Magazine Street to a little diner for some pancakes, hash browns, bacon, and eggs. We like the change and don't mind the car ride. I especially like the plate of white carbs accented with butter I order...pancakes, hash brown, biscuit. We'll do it again next weekend, while waiting to return to our routine.

Sunday

It's not even June and the heat has driven us in. It was a cold movie theater, daiquiris, and popcorn for Sunday afternoon.

We loved, loved, loved Narnia. Loved it so much I didn't slip into typical movie nap mode, even with a daiquiri in me.

We made it to the deck at Landry's just in time for sunset over the lake. We try to avoid large chains in favor of small local restaurants, but lakefront options are limited these days.

Landry's has deck seating over the lake...something we loved at Brunning's and Sid-Mar's, both small, family owned restaurants. Most likely Landry's is the only operation able to afford rebuilding and insurance for a lake side location.

So we enjoyed the sunset, people watching, a few beers....

...gumbo, and crab.

Good date, out of the heat.

Sunday

Charlie went in to the lab early this morning and we were having coffee and bagels by 8:00 at the Laurel Street Bakery. Reading the newspaper across from each other is really the perfect way to start the day, and being at the bakery somehow makes it even better. This morning Charlie read aloud a few bits of the article about the man floating in the Gulf while a shark circled before we read and sipped in silence, enjoying the sound of the bread hook at work in the bakery and the breeze from the open door.

Our bikes were already loaded, so by 9:30 we were on the Causeway, heading to the north shore of the lake. We listened to The Chronicles of Narnia in preparation for the newly released film. We had listened to about half of the discs in all of our cross country driving while evacuated after Hurricane Katrina, but hadn't really been in the car for enough time to make any progress since then.

Starting the discs made me a bit teary at first. It was a difficult time for us, uncertain what our future was and where our future was for our family. And during the time we listened I was pregnant and we spoke of listening to books on tapes as a family and even added "Lucy" (one of the characters) to our list of baby names. But the tears came and went as I brought myself to the here and now on the Causeway with Charlie listening to a book on tape on a Sunday morning.

By 11:00 we were peddling out of Covington on The Tammany Trace. It was once a railroad corridor through St. Tammany Parish but now it is 26.5 miles of paved path connecting Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Lacombe, and Slidell.

We started in Old Covington with designs on making the entire 53 mile round trip journey to Slidell and back.

I spent most of the day following. Same old excuse...my short legs can only peddle so fast, and besides I was overstimulated and had lots to look at! He would have died if I hopped off my bike to photograph the turtles an waterlilies.

After riding out two hours, and a few stops to massage the jello legs and munch on granola, we decided we had better turn around and head back.

I figure we made it about 20 miles out, and it was an awfully long peddle back.

I was dumped when we reached Abita Springs, so he could make better time without me. The last 3 miles to Covington he did solo and then met me with the truck at the Abita Brew Pub.

And in compete South Louisiana fashion, there was an outdoor concert going on at the park next door! Lots of umbrellas, lawn chairs, and beers with the fiddle and washboard and accordion providing tunes.

Beers, burgers, beers, and root beer floats!

I am not sure if I'll be walking in the morning. I hope I can manage to get down the stairs to leave the house.

Charlie brought home two growlers...one with Andygator and the other with a new Four Grain Brew.

And you know, those beers don't last long in the growlers, so we are drinking up, trying to forget our legs are attached to our bodies!

Another Sunday

We planned an all day cycle on Sunday, but quickly changed plans when we awoke to an early morning shower and a sky full of clouds. It actually turned out to be a great day for biking, but I am happy that we got some errands out of the way and some chores done around the house.

But late afternoon on Sunday we went to enjoy some of the music presented in City Park. There are bands in the Botanical Gardens on Thursdays and Sundays.

We enjoyed the tunes of Soul Project and Johnny Sketch under the live oaks while sipping mint juleps....just soooo Southern.

There were a fair amount of people lounging on the lawn. I think this is something we'll try to do more often.

Lee and Angie joined us for a while.

Afterwards, the four of us headed to the Bulldog for some burgers and to watch the Hornets. Ugh, what a disappointment that game was. Hoping they get back in the series with Tuesday night's game at home in the Arena.

Sundays are shaping up to be quite the day of the week for those of us on Bordeaux Street. Already looking ahead to the next one.

Another Sunday

Yesterday the calender called for a mini garage sale, but that didn't happen. Instead we spent a few hours getting the Jena Street house ready to be put on the market. And we slept in. And Charlie went to the lab. And we went to the basketball game. So, no garage sale. That's okay. I'm thinking I should just donate the stuff and have someone pick it up, but thought a little cash in my pocket for cochon de lait poboys at Jazzfest would be nice.

And today was the scheduled spring cleaning. That DID indeed happen after Charlie's trip to the lab and breakfast at the bakery. We cleaned for nearly 10 hours. Now we are enjoying the scent of orange furniture polish with a hint of Comet cleanser, and really I can't think of anything that smells better!

Cleaning today made me think that my mother in law must cringe when she comes to visit! I don't think of my house as dirty. We never leave dishes in the sink, linens get washed each week, bathrooms get a good scrub twice a month, and I can usually get a thorough mopping out of Charlie about once a month. But you should have seen the dirt we cleaned up today.

How on earth does my hair get to the very back of the refrigerator??? And the sunlight that was being blocked by the layer of dust on the blinds...yuck!

A few things I've learned this spring cleaning:
  • White plantation blinds would be a bad idea. Stick to oak. More difficult to see dust.
  • Stainless steel wipes really work on the appliances.
  • Batture's hair is everywhere and on everything. My hair runs a close second.
  • The Dyson vacuum was worth every penny (Thanks JD and Pudge for all those pennies!)
  • Spring cleaning should happen twice a year rather than once every two years.
And I really like cleaning with Charlie. He was pretty silly up until about the last hour when he was sweaty, stinky, and crabby. But for the most part, the ten hours cleaning up were full of singing and clowning around. We make a good team.
